The next day, I tell Barret about the whole ordeal at the shop. He seems pretty skittish about the situation. “I don’t like this, Mags.”

I hand him his morning coffee and he takes a tentative sip. “Oh, chillax. I’m sure it’s nothing. I mean, we’re a salon, for goodness sake. We don’t carry a lot of money around anyway. No damage was done. Mick says he’ll keep an eye on the place.”

“No, I mean I have a bad feeling about it. Yesterday, when I cut a guy’s hair, I might have been coming on a little strong. He was pretty cute. But he got upset and said he wasn’t gay and to leave him alone. I backed off, but it left a sour taste in my mouth. Do you think this could be retaliation of some kind?” Barret’s hands are wrapped around his cup and they’re shaking slightly. I place my hand on his.

“Hey, I don’t think this has anything to do with the shop being broke into. It’s okay. There were no gay slang words spray painted on the walls. Did this customer scare you?” I ask, concerned.

“A little. He may have mentioned he had a gun.”

“Oh, sweetie.” I pull Barret into a big hug and rub circles on his back with my palm. “I’m sure we won’t see him again. I wouldn’t worry about it. That was just a bad experience is all. I’m sure of all this crap will blow over.”

I give him my best smile and hope he buys it. I really don’t think this has to do anything with a hate crime, but I’ll let Mick know just the same.

Thankfully, the customer door rings with the sound of my two friends strolling into the shop. This will keep our minds off all this criminal activity. Of course, Evie is wearing her typical business attire complete with pencil skirt and bun. Lenora’s just a big, bright ray of sunshine with her golden hair and sundress.

“Hey, girl! We are here for a new color on our toes and gossip. Lay it on me,” Evie says.

“Oh, and you brought January!”

Lenora hands her sweet baby girl over to me. I’ve never wanted children, but I still love to hold babies. They smell so good and they’re so soft. January coos in my arms. She’s the best baby.

“Pretty sure Jake is laying it on ya or giving it to ya,” Lenora replies to Evie.

I giggle at their bickering. They act a lot like sisters in that respect. I’m glad they’ve welcomed me into their circle. It’s difficult for me to keep girlfriends. Many of my so-called friends back in school stabbed me in the back and really weren’t my friends ever. Lenora and Evie have always been upfront and honest with me.

“Ha! So funny, Lee, and you’re one to talk. I’m surprised Hunter hasn’t knocked you up yet. I mean . . . what’s it been . . . 3 months since you had baby Jan? He was already telling Jake he was aiming for a boy next time.
